✍ My Personal Study Notes: The Rules
Hi everyone! Before we jump into the textbook solutions, let's look at the basic rules I copied down in class today. This makes converting Roman Numerals super easy!
- The Base Symbols:
I= 1,V= 5,X= 10. - Rule 1 (Limits): We can only repeat
IandXup to 3 times consecutively. The letterVcan NEVER repeat! - Rule 2 (Adding): When a smaller symbol goes to the Right of a larger one, we add them together (e.g.,
VI= 5 + 1 = 6). - Rule 3 (Subtracting): When a smaller symbol goes to the Left of a larger one, we subtract it (e.g.,
IV= 5 - 1 = 4). Remember: You can only place a singleIto the left! - Rule 4 (Double Digits): For numbers 11 to 20, write the tens first (
X), then attach the correct unit symbols on the right.
✏️ Solved Problem Set 1 Questions
Q1. Write all the numbers from 1 to 20 using Roman numerals.
1: I | 2: II | 3: III | 4: IV | 5: V | 6: VI | 7: VII | 8: VIII | 9: IX | 10: X
11: XI | 12: XII | 13: XIII | 14: XIV | 15: XV | 16: XVI | 17: XVII | 18: XVIII | 19: XIX | 20: XX
Q2. Write the following numbers using international numerals: V, VII, X, XIII, XIV, XVI, XVIII, IX.
V= 5VII= 5 + 2 = 7X= 10XIII= 10 + 3 = 13XIV= 10 + (5 - 1) = 14XVI= 10 + 5 + 1 = 16XVIII= 10 + 5 + 3 = 18IX= 10 - 1 = 9
Q3. Fill in the empty boxes of the matching table below.
| Number Name | Roman Numeral |
|---|---|
| Three | III |
| Eight | VIII |
| Six | VI |
| Twelve | XII |
| Fifteen | XV |
| Nineteen | XIX |
Q4. Write the numbers using Roman numerals: 9, 2, 17, 4, 11, 18.
- 9 = IX
- 2 = II
- 17 = 10 + 7 = XVII
- 4 = IV
- 11 = 10 + 1 = XI
- 18 = 10 + 8 = XVIII
Q5. Check if the following Roman numeral representations are correct. If incorrect, write the correct form.
Something more : L, C, D and M are also used as Roman numerals.
📌 Important Points
- The system uses letters:
I, V, X, L, C, D, M. - We learned L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. These are useful for larger numbers!
- The system does not have a character for zero (0).
💡 Exam Tips
Orange Tip: When you see a Roman numeral, trace it from left to right. If a smaller letter is followed by a bigger one, subtract! Otherwise, keep adding!
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Watch Out: Do not write IIX for 8. It's a common trap in tests. 8 is always written as VIII.
🔄 Quick Revision
